Week 01 - 03 | MA Data Visualisation Term 1

I am pleased to begin my MA in Data Visualization at LCC this week. This platform will serve as a space for weekly reflections on my academic development, practical explorations, and sources of conceptual and visual inspiration.

In our first sessions, I had the opportunity to engage with my peers through activities centered on the concept of small multiples, as well as peer-to-peer presentations designed to foster mutual understanding. These interactions provided valuable insights into the diverse backgrounds, practices, and motivations that inform my classmates' approaches to data visualization.

We worked together to iterate new variations of our multiples — using marks and attributes to create a visual language for data.

This group project involved four members collaboratively
exploring their respective family histories. By leveraging data visualisation,
we recreated the narratives of key historical moments and
mapped the trajectories that brought each of our families to the
encounters at LCC. This process not only allowed us to delve into the
personal and historical significance of our stories but also provided
an introduction to the fundamentals of data visualisation. Through
this project, we began to understand how storytelling can serve as a
powerful tool in data visualisation, effectively weaving complex information
into engaging, meaningful narratives.

I have been reading ‘Data Visualisation for Success. Victoria: The Images Publishing Group.’.The book offers a clear and insightful introduction to the principles of artistic research, effectively outlining both its conceptual foundations and the practical steps involved in producing a research document. I am eager to delve further into its content and deepen my understanding of research methodologies within the context of visual practice.
