This project explores how data visualization and narrative design can intersect to reveal ecological patterns. Using the NYC @squirrelcensus dataset,
we focused on visualizing the movement and activity ranges of squirrels in New York City’s Central Park. Our goal was to transform quantitative data into engaging visual patterns and a storyboard that highlights spatial dynamics and hidden rhythms.Through combining analytical insight with creative design, the project aimed to enhance both audience understanding and the emotional connection to the data.

The project has also developed into a sound album centred on the sounds of London in the late afternoon, sampling four different areas (Central, Middle, South, East) and translating field-recorded ambient sounds into rhythmic, textural and layered soundscapes. Each track corresponds to an urban area, using the unique sound elements of the area - the celebratory hustle and bustle of Chinatown, the chatter and cycling around the stadium, the spatial reverberations of the War Museum, the winds and breaths of Victoria Park - as the musical source material to create An experimental album combining sound art and data visualisation.

Our current modern status quo has led to an era known as the Anthropocene. In this era, we are confronted with a crucial reality: human sovereignty and its impact on the planet have become so pervasive as to threaten our ecosystems and the well-being of non-human life. This era forces us to acknowledge that we can no longer continue to treat nature as an external object to be manipulated at will.

By leveraging data visualisation, we recreated the narratives of key historical moments and mapped the trajectories that brought each of our families to the encounters at LCC. This process not only allowed us to delve into the personal and historical significance of our stories but also provided an introduction to the fundamentals of data visualisation. Through this project, we began to understand how storytelling can serve as a powerful tool in data visualisation, effectively weaving complex information into engaging, meaningful narratives.
